The Virginia Falls

Proposing the double curvature (free-form) surface, as a screen in front of the building visualizing the elegant wood curtain dressing the square hutch. While the simple minimal design is solemnly catching the eyes from far distances, its complicated detailed design absorbs the spectators in front of the building, mesmerizing them with the new spectrum of architectural design. Its warm tone wood material and the geometrical design at the entrance infuse a warm welcoming to the building. While the front screen creates the private surrounding for the habitant inside, the mechanical movable system allows the screen to be opened in order to enjoy the fresh air and the view of outside.

The curved wood screen is consisting of about 70 custom pieces, differentiated in curvature. Each piece is individually formed out of a couple of layers of milled waterproof plywood glued with Marine adhesive, which is shaped on the waffle structure cast. Such a complex materialization process with its complex geometry form cannot be addressed with a traditional design and construction method, instead only becoming controllable and freely formable through computer programming design and digital fabrication. The aim is to establish a closer link between the unique and non-standard design and contemporary building practice.
